Seating is an important
way to maintain body alignment and maximize upper extremity movement.
Proper seating provides stability and support, decreases the likelihood of
postural deformities and enhances hand use functions.
Many
therapists recommend a firm back and seat to align the pelvis and femurs
and to provide a symmetrical sitting base. An adjustable seat depth
assures that the thigh is well supported to prevent undue internal
rotation stress on the femoral head. Adjustable seat depth also reduces
the effect of tight hamstrings or extensor spasticity on the pelvic and
spinal posture. The firm back and adjustable seat depth helps maintain the
pelvis in vertical alignment with thoracic extension to assure functional
sitting and optimize fine motor functions. The adjustable footrest makes
it possible to position the hips and knees at 80-90 degrees and allows for
adjusting thigh support pressure on the seat surface as the foot rest is
raised or lowered.
The abductor pad maintains the alignment of hips
and knees. This symmetrical position, combined with the seat belt across
the pelvis, decreases the tendency for the child to push out of the chair
with extension. Additional pelvic stability and femoral alignment can be
obtained by adding the optional pelvic-thigh stabilizer to work in concert
with the abductor.
